BOLT International Moth

Project Type

High Performance and Composites Engineering

Date

2017

Location

Helsinki, Finland

In 2016-2017, the BOLT Moth was conceived, incorporating features that would later appear in production Moths 5 to 6 years later. The design prioritized aerodynamics in every feature of the boat, including the design of a wing-mast.
Thorough analysis was conducted across all components to enhance and streamline their functionality. Collaborating with WB Sails, we utilized.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to compare and refine the BOLT Moth's performance against industry-leading counterparts.

A standout feature of the BOLT Moth was its integrated front wing bars, seamlessly housing all lines within and boasting the lowest resistance. Also, both forward and aft wing bars featured an airfoil section, optimizing aerodynamic efficiency.

Constructed entirely from full prepreg carbon fiber in state-of-the-art molds, the deck, hull and internal structural elements were built using the revolutionary ONE-SHOT method. This approach minimized weight from gluing parts together, maximizing precision, and reducing post-processing and human error.

The project pioneered various composite construction techniques and high-performance solutions such as the deck sweeper sail + boom and a track.
BLUEWORKS Inc pivoted to foiling motorboats, and the BOLT Moth project, along with all molds, were sold.
