In partnership with WB Sails, I developed multiple carbon fiber battens designed specifically for the Olympic class Finn boat. This project offered a unique opportunity to innovate and push the boundaries of performance within the limitations of the one-design rule.
The design and construction of the battens were intricate and precise, focusing on achieving specific bending shapes tailored to each of the five different battens at the leech of the sail. To accomplish this, a MATLAB code was developed to adjust the stiffness along the span of the batten, resulting in a customized laminate schedule for each shape.
Various types of carbon fiber were strategically employed to achieve the desired deflections. The culmination of these efforts was several podium finishes and a World Championship title. This success stands as a testament to the dedication invested in pushing the boundaries of performance within the constraints of Olympic class sailing regulations.
